I experience this sort of thing to this day. Never been able to figure out why people seem to think that I don't have anything worthwhile to contribute to a conversation. Or that I won't mind when they verbally overpower me, as though I'm not standing right there. :(
@Dan: Yeah. In this case it's just Peter being smaller than everyone else and not as coherent. We barely noticed him until he yelled the punchline. It's a lot harder to believe that you aren't noticed when your head comes up above the other person's waist.
@Journo: That's my family for ya. Mom and Mary were talking about Mary's crash course in driving with a stick. And how she never ever wants to do that again and **why** would her uncle make her go through that!?
I'm Brigid, not my birth-name, but the one I chose for Confirmation. It's a Catholic thing. Want to learn more about how I grew up? Check out my semi-autobiographical webcomic, Mary Quite Contrary.
The closest I've come to earning a living as a writer is one summer I worked as a feature columnist for a small-town newspaper. I've been telling and writing stories my whole life, though, and, hey, it's something I enjoy. Whether I manage to make a buck at it isn't that important to me.

Brigid,
Happily, our heads are more 'on the same level' now. He's studying for his driver's license now. Time whizzes by.
@Dad: Yep. Seems like yesterday he was playing SuperPeter and actually paying attention when we talked to him.
Wow, that is one fast learner. *whistles*
What exactly were Mary and her mother talking about?
