Ye-es. Sparing the readers was a kindly thing to do. I've felt that 'I suppose it was inevitable' sensation a few times. Quite a few, actually, over the decades.
About change? That's never easy to deal with, for what it's worth.

I do wonder if the background in the first panel is understandable. Is it clear what it's supposed to be?

Now that you pointed it out, and asked - I believe I recognize the object.
Drawing can be tricky, can't it?
Oh yeah. I contemplated shading it, but thought that I really didn't want to make this any more complicated than it already was. Besides, you'd think a mushroom cloud would be fairly recognizable even partially obscured, right?
Or maybe not.
The background? Lessee, I'm thinkin' either a mushroom cloud [BOOM], or Mary's at McDonald's standing in front of Mayor McCheese. ;-)
